A velocity selector is a device that uses a combination of an electric field and a magnetic field to select particles that are moving at a particular velocity and “eliminate” particles that are moving faster or slower than that velocity. For a velocity selector with fields aligned as below:
– Draw the direction of the force on the ion due to the electric field.
– Draw the direction of the force on the ion due to the magnetic field.
– Derive an equation that will balance the forces on the ion due to the magnetic and electric fields (use Newton’s 2nd law).
– If the magnitude of the electric field is 100 N/C, what does the magnitude of the magnetic field need to be in order to select for 1000 m/s.
